Secure Card Readers (SCR)

Payment Solutions that includes EMV card transations will in most cases need support for offline PIN verification. This requires devices that can transfer the PIN in a secure manner between the EPP and a Secure Card Reader (SCR). The Cryptera PIN entry devices have been PCI PTS 5.x approved with two different Secure Card Readers.

Crypera EPP 1215, EPP 2200 and ETC 6260 will work with dedicated Secure Card Readers to perform offline PIN verification. These Cryptera PIN entry devices have been PCI PTS 5.x approved with two different Secure Card Readers.

When devices are installed, the EPP/ETC and the SCR will exchange information in order to perform a mutual authentication and transfer of encryption keys. This setup allows secure transfer of the PIN from the EPP/ETC to the EMV card in the SCR (EMV offline PIN verification).

SCRs also have a role in protecting card data that is part of payment transactions (SRED – Secure Reading and Exchange of Data).

The choice of SCR for the solution will depend on the specific operation and the payment applications that utilize the card reader functionality.

Cryptera offers

Cryptera offers the SCR 5210 which connects directly to EPP 1215 and EPP 2200. It also works with the ETC 6260. This SCR has been created in collaboration with Nidec Sankyo and included in the PCI approvals of the ETC/EPPs.

Another alternative for EMV solutions needing offline PIN support is to combine the PIN entry devices with the Magtek oDynamo SCR. This has also been PCI 5 PTS approved with the EPPs.
